BIOGRAPHY

Chantal Backman RN, MHA, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, an ICES Fellow, Life Stage Research Program, a Senior Scientist at Institut du Savoir Montfort, an Affiliate Investigator in the Methodological & Implementation Research Program of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and an Affiliate Investigator in the Care of the Elderly program at Bruyère Research Institute. She completed a PhD from the University of Alberta in 2011.

Prior to joining the faculty, Professor Backman held various positions at The Ottawa Hospital in the departments of Quality and Patient Experience, Performance Measurement and Nursing Professional Practice, where she was involved in a variety of quality improvement and strategic planning activities; including the oversight of the accreditation processes, the patient safety incident management system and the development of various patient experience initiatives such as the Post-Discharge Phone Call Program and the Patient and Family Advisory Council.

Professor Backman's research program aims to improve the quality of care, patient safety and the experience of older adults within the healthcare system, with a particular focus on minority language populations. The axes of her research include: 1) Improving the quality of care and safety of frail older adults; 2) Understanding the role of nurses in optimizing the quality of care; 3) Improving patient and family-centered care transitions between health care settings and 4) Evaluating the use of digital health for safer care. She uses a variety of methods, including population health administrative databases, mixed methods, and implementation science. She is also a co-investigator on several research grants and has been an invited lecturer nationally and internationally.
